Angad Singh Ji thanks so much for sharing everything with us. You're doing a great seva for the panth. What you share with me I share with others. I've been bringing my laptop to the Gurdwara and making CDs for people after Gurdwara so that people can enjoy more kirtan. I was curious if you could explain the following from your post "Raag Guldastas and taranas." I've never heard of Raag Guldastas, and I'm not familiar with taranas either. I still have a lot to learn. Thanks.

Fateh Ji

I am gald you are helping to spread the love of guru nanak.

Raag Guldasta
Guldasta is a bouquet and generally contatins differnt kind of flowers and other things..so same goes with a raag guldasta..its using different raags in the same shabad..its not there in the guru granth sahib ji but i believe there are a few raag guldastas in the dasam granth.

an example:
raag mala of the gur granth sahib..you can sing it in different raags so that would become a guldasta

taranas..
its 10th guru sahibs bani and some of his poets works.if i am not wrong it is written in the suraj parkash granth.

thats all i know about taranas will find out more and then get back to you in a while.

will be sending out your cd's by tuesday the u ll get em in a week or so.

Angad Singh - I think you meant that taranas are found in "Sarab Loh Granth", not Suraj Parkash Granth. Yes, this is indeed a form of singing in which the words are made up of sounds that sound like musical notes. An example of Dasam Bani is "trad dani dani tomdani talal tom dirna...". The Khalsa Ensemble (Boston) had sung one in Rag Mian ki Malhar a couple of years ago. Bhai Gurmit Singh Shant, Bhai Balbir Singh and very few other ragis have the ability to sing taranas of Guru Gobind Singh. West Panjab Sufi music also contains taranas so it is not unique to Sikh culture and neither is Rag Guldasta. However, accomplished kirtania are adept (and allowed) to render this during kirtan.

On the other hand the Partal genre is completely unique in Sikh musicology and is not found in any other South Asian musical tradition.

Carhdi Kala - good job keep the posts coming!

Dear Inderpreet Veeji,

Thanks for correcting me and giving me an insight into taranas and raag guldastas.

As for your comment " However, accomplished kirtania are adept (and allowed) to render this during kirtan. " While doing a shabad from the SGGS i would still stick to and strictly advocate nirdharit raag.

Thanks a lot
